What's the difference between interactive and static maps?
Interactive maps let you add pan, zoom, and click interactions with full developer control via SDKs like MapLibre and Leaflet. Static maps are simple image embeds. They're faster to load and easier to integrate when you don't need interactivity. Choose interactive for web apps and mobile; choose static for emails, PDFs, and quick embeds.
Which map styles should I use?
Alidade Bright is clean and readable for most applications. Alidade Satellite combines satellite imagery with vector overlays for geographic context. Stamen Toner is minimalist and print-friendly. Alidade Smooth is light and modern. Pick based on your use case, then customize with tools like Maputnik if needed.
Can I use satellite imagery everywhere?
Our satellite imagery covers the globe with highest detail in populated areas. Coverage is continuous, but detail varies by region. Stadia Maps satellite tiles are 512x512 px, covering the same area as a vector tile (4x the area of a standard raster tile) for efficient loading.
How do I add custom styling to maps?
Use open-source tools like Maputnik to edit map styles visually, or edit Mapbox Style JSON directly. Both approaches work with Stadia Maps vector tiles. Refer to our map styles documentation for custom style examples.
Which SDKs does Stadia Maps support?
For web, we support MapLibre GL JS, Leaflet, and OpenLayers. For mobile, we have native iOS and Android SDKs, plus React Native and Flutter. For desktop, use web-based SDKs in Electron or native platforms. Check our SDK documentation for setup guides.
Do you track user location data on maps?
No. Stadia Maps doesn't collect telemetry, track end-user interactions with maps, or sell behavioral data. We're fully GDPR and CCPA compliant. See our privacy commitment for details.
What if I exceed my monthly credits?
If you've enabled additional usage, overages are billed at your plan's rate. If you haven't enabled overages, requests will return a 429 rate-limit error. Upgrade your plan anytime, and changes are prorated.
Are there rate limits on map tile requests?
Your constraint is monthly credits, not requests-per-second. You can serve tiles as fast as your infrastructure allows within your monthly budget. Contact us if you need specialized arrangements.
What data sources power Stadia Maps?
Stadia Maps products are built primarily on OpenStreetMap, a collaborative, global map database maintained by a community of volunteers. We add licensed satellite imagery and our own curated styling. Regular updates reflect improvements to OpenStreetMap data.
Can I use Stadia Maps for commercial purposes?
Yes, but the free plan is for non-commercial use only. Commercial use requires a paid subscription starting at $20/month (Starter plan). Academic research qualifies for the free tier if non-commercial.
