About Stadia Maps

Location APIs for Developers

Building location features into a product shouldn't force a tradeoff between quality, cost, and your users' privacy. Stadia Maps provides map tiles, geocoding, routing, and navigation APIs on infrastructure built for global performance, transparent pricing, and real human support, all without tracking your users and with no lock-in.

Stadia Maps is also a founding member of MapLibre, the open-source map rendering collective.

The Problem Stadia Maps Solves

In 2016, Ian and Luke were building a mapping solution for a client with high standards: beautiful map design, fast loading times, and easy setup, all within a budget that made sense for a small, growing business.

Sound familiar?

Existing providers couldn't deliver. They were either too expensive or too limited in performance and customization. So Ian and Luke built what their client actually needed on top of open-source projects like OpenStreetMap and MapLibre, and that became Stadia Maps.

Why Developers Choose Stadia Maps

Fast, privacy-first location APIs for maps, routing, and geocoding, backed by globally distributed infrastructure, transparent usage-based pricing, and support from actual engineers (not a ticket queue). From early-stage products to enterprise systems and AI agents, Stadia Maps is the location layer that scales with you.

How Stadia Maps Delivers Speed and Reliability

Serving map tiles quickly at global scale is a hard infrastructure problem: millions of tiles, rendered from billions of underlying data points, need to reach users anywhere in the world with minimal latency. Stadia Maps is built on open-source mapping projects, with every layer of the data pipeline and API delivery infrastructure engineered and optimized in-house rather than taken off the shelf.

Stadia Maps also offers EU-only endpoints, so your users' data never leaves the European Union. Privacy is built into the infrastructure, not bolted on after the fact.

APIs Stadia Maps Offers

Stadia Maps' core APIs cover the location features most products need:

  • Static Maps: Pre-rendered map images for emails, PDFs, and low-bandwidth contexts
  • Map Tiles: Vector and raster tiles for web, mobile, and desktop
  • Geocoding & Search: Forward and reverse geocoding, address autocomplete
  • Routing & Navigation: Turn-by-turn directions across driving, cycling, and walking profiles

Every API is built on open standards, so you can self-host or migrate your data at any time. You're never locked into a proprietary format.

Meet the Team

Built and run by a small team, chosen for reliability by teams much bigger than us

Stadia Maps is run by a small team spread across three continents. That distributed footprint isn't incidental; it's part of how a small company delivers infrastructure with consistently fast performance for users everywhere, not just near one data center.

Ian is a serial entrepreneur who loves making the world more accessible with technology. He fell in love with maps when studying the world map placemat his mom gave him as a child.

When he isn’t “working,” he enjoys learning languages (the more esoteric, the better) and traveling whenever he has a chance.

Away from work, Rob enjoys playing golf, but admits he's not a golfer because, as he puts it, the difference between the two is 10-20 strokes.
